Brains behind the beauty

Words by Sean Douglas

20 years ago when Salma Hayak first hit our screens as Antonio Banderos’ side kick in the cult classic Desperado. So it seems Hayak’s career may have come full circle as she now takes on the lead, gun toting, role in new ‘shoot ‘em up’ action flick, Everly.

The plot goes something like this:

Everly is working with the police to bring down the organization of her former boss, criminal overlord Taiko. Betrayed by one of his ‘girls’ Taiko has dispatched a plethora of hench men and her former colleagues to try and wreak his revenge. Needless to say with Salma Hayek in the lead role, Everly will have many close calls but ultimately emerge unscathed ( spoiler alert!) This film is essentially, the love child of Kill Bill and Dusk till dawn set in a block of flats. This film is by all accounts slickly shot by director Joe Lynch but with many films of this genre the style is more impressive than the substance.

Reviews so far aren’t looking so good, with a 2/5 on rotten tomatoes and only 4.9/10 on IMDb it seems fair to say that Everly is unlikely to be as timeless as Desperado.

Now I should come clean about this film review. I usually post reviews on the day the films come out but on this occasion the 1st May UK, we have been informed by the distributor, has been scrapped and unfortunately for Salma this one is going straight to DVD. Far from being distraught about her films B movie status it seems like Salma may have got what she wanted. She recently stated in a Guardian interview, “[Everly] It’s not what I thought it would be. I want it to go away, that one.”

Salma Hayek

It’s easy to see why Salma may have taken this view. Salma is one of the most intelligent women in Hollywood, but in this film it’s her looks and physique that’s being used to sell this film. Now before you cry hypocrite, yes, I do realise I created a Top 10 hottest Dyslexic list in which I featured Salma, but that was just a bit of fun. Also that was before I had the pleasure of spending an evening in her company. If you’ve been anywhere near Salma Hayak, it is abundantly clear she is super smart, super determined and very sweet and approachable. Even Oprah Winfrey describes her as ‘one of the smartest women I’ve ever met.’

I must hasten to add the evening I spent with Salma Hayak was in a room with about 900 other people, at her launch of The Prophet, an animated feature film she produced based on Kahlil Gibran’s book of the same name.

Salma Hayak The Prophet

At the event I got the chance to briefly speak with her and on learning that I am Dyslexic she shrieked, “I’m Dyslexic too! Look at all the notes and papers I needed with me for this evening”. After that I gave her my card and asked her to come on The Codpast. Needless to say I am still waiting, so Salma if you are reading this, there is still time to call, I won’t be upset you’ve made me wait so long.

Unfortunately for Salma, a woman as stunningly beautiful as she is, in an industry that is obsessed with appearance, what Selma has achieved off screen will always be overshadowed by the fact that she is very, very attractive.

Taking this into account we at The Codpast have decided to do something totally radical. Something that the press hardly ever do! We are going to talk about Salma Hayak’s Brain! Shock horror!!!
