I’ve recently completed work on a steampunk novel called ‘Garden’ written by dyslexic author Jane Yates.

The story has strong associations with the traditional book The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, except this tale is interwoven with Steampunk, sci-fi and fantasy overtones.

The story starts with young girl Aberdeen and her home in space, above a perilous Earth suffering from Oxygen deprivation. We follow her journey back to the Motherland and see as she is thrown in at the deep end, under the uninterested Guardianship of her Uncle, left to wander his estate and home. During her time there, magic, science and technology play a significant part in the Earths recovery, as she grows and develops herself and discovers the most wonderful friendships.

One of my favourite fantasy series is Robin Hobb’s Farseer Trilogy. The Assassin’s Apprentice is the first book in the series, and narrated by Paul Boehmer, it brings to life a world full of intrigue, magic and somewhere far-off, perhaps a few remaining dragons.

The story follows Fitz, the lonely royal Bastard, and his discovery of the ancient, magical link with animals he possesses, known as the Wit. A truly Epic story, that had me gripped from start to finish.

Whilst we’re talking about Fantasy books, who could forget to mention Terry Pratchett? With his recent death, there is no better time to indulge in some of his incredible books.

A great place to start is with The Colour of Magic series, and especially Discworld book 1. Narrated by Nigel Planer, the story evocatively creates the world of another magical planet and all its inhabitants. Once you listen, you’ll be hooked on Terry Pratchett’s work.
